Week 2 ~ 10/02/20 – 16/02/20

In week 2 of the team project, Dom created some basic NPC’s and I began to draw out some concepts for characters.

During this second week I created these NPC concept designs:

Nick came round to my house on the evening of the first day this week to use my Sims 4 game to create a basic house design. I helped him to do this and we talked about what perspective and style the game should be in – in reference to the pixel inspiration posted earlier in the discord. After he left I adjusted the Sims house so that it could be shown on a grid to make it easier for him to work from and sent him this follow up image:

And I also started work on a GDD but didn’t get very far with it this week.

We had a conference call on Discord during the week where we discussed possibilities for dialogue as part of the UI. I suggested having text with a character portrait next to it which I could draw in the style that I had done the concept designs. I then later posted this as a follow up to the suggestion and members of the group seemed keen on this idea:

Also during the conference call, we further discussed the theme of the game, the functionality, and the art style. We discussed whether the UI would be designed from within Unity or whether I would need to draw UI elements for it. I wasn’t entirely clear on whether a decision was made about this so for the meantime Adam will be continuing to make the UI elements through Unity.

Adam discussed with me some problems that they have been facing from a programming side with filling the anxiety meter. I shared some ideas with them for possible ways to fix the problem and we worked through it on screen share together during the call.

Finally, we discussed how characters would be shown to be friendly. A few ideas were thrown about but we eventually settled on having circles; red for unfriendly or green for friendly; underneath the NPC’s. We all agreed to start thinking about names for the group and ended the call there.

We decided to also start a Trello which would be added to by all of the group members.

At the end of the group call we filled out a tab in the Trello with what our ideas were so far:

I then went back in a few days later and created some more tabs and coloured markers for how urgent the jobs were: (screencap taken at a later date)

which were then filled in across the week by members of the group.

Finally on the last day of the week Sophie and I began to fill out some Quest ideas for NPC’s:
