Shark Boy

In this assignment, we were tasked to create a hammerhead shark head. I decided to take it further to challenge myself by creating a caricature of a great white shark child. I started out this assignment by designing a Shark Boy character. I used Procreate to sketch and colour this design. It is my own original design. I looked at images of great white sharks for reference while sketching out this piece. I used a 6B brush on Procreate for both the sketch and colouring.

I will now take this sketch and use it as reference for designing this character on Zbrush.

Dyamesh body, I tried to make the mouth look more comical than the original drawing. My original drawing isn’t translating very easily into 3d and I will have to keep this in mind when designing in the future:

Dynamesh fins and tail added to the body, next, I will retopologise:

Retopologised and slight adjustments to the size and angle of the head:

I noticed that the tail was the wrong way for a great white shark, and I also wanted to give the piece more A Symetrical movement so I’ve made some adjustments to the shapes of the fins and the tail:

I trialled blending the fins with the body but ultimately decided to return to the unblended form as I felt like blending the fins lost some of the child like feel that the design had. Leaving the fins separate gives it more of a plastic toy aesthetic which I prefer. Both can be seen here:

Adding some colour and eyes:

Working on adding the extra details was the hardest part and took a lot of time. Adding the zipper to the bag was especially difficult. I created a line of teeth for the zipper and then resized it, but the issue then was how to round it into position. After doing some research I discovered the deform tools within the move tool. this was exceptionally helpful and I continued to use this tool to speed up my workflow for adding the rest of the props. I created the book in Maya and exported it into Zbrush:

None of the assets in this design were premade, everything in this design is my own and made from scratch using primitives. I’m really proud of this piece of work and hope that you enjoy it too!
