Initial Designs and Concepts
Across my time on this project, I created various unfinished pieces of concept art. I did not intend to complete these images, but rather, I produced them to explore ideas without modelling. Doing this helped me to settle on a design for the chest piece and leg armour. It also helped me to decide on the shape of the pauldron.
When considering my design, it was crucial to me not to make the breastplate have any fitting to the breasts. I did not want to sexualise my design in any way, and in fact, I wanted the armour to be slightly masculine in appearance. So, although I explored the idea of a fitted breastplate, I ended up going with a rounded breastplate in the end. Leona, as a character, would want her armour to be as practical as possible and not end up with an arrow right in her chest!
Below are three of my concept drawings. I created these by drawing on top of my body model in Procreate. I was reasonably happy with these designs and ended up keeping many of the elements, although changing the styling to be more masculine. You can even see my initial thoughts of the cape, which is present in my final design.
After completing the third image above, I stopped concepting and moved on to creating the assets, as I had a clear idea in my head of what I wanted. My illustration skills are not good enough to put down on paper exactly what I am picturing; therefore, it was better for me to start modelling. I based the armour design upon my concepts while altering it to be more masculine, using the Male armour references presented in the first post.
